The Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking was founded by Alastair Boell in 2007. After graduating from the world renowned North Bennet Street School, Boston (USA) Alastair felt that there was a great need in Australia for an educational facility that focuses on traditional skills.

The Guild is committed to preserving and advancing craft traditions in furniture making. We are also committed to promoting a greater awareness and appreciation of
craftsmanship. In our classes we emphasize the skillful use of hand tools and power equipment and an informed use of appropriate materials. We are passionate about what we do and want to share information, ideas and skills with all our students young and old, from beginner to advanced.

Natural Edged Bench - Beginners Course

Jacqueline Boell

$990.00 AUD

Presented by Lee Gratton

This elegant Natural Edged Bench offers a satisfying taste of chair making with the convenience of it being scheduled every Wednesday evening for a single term (10 week course).

The two main differences between this Natural Edged Bench and our Windsor Inspired Footstool is that this bench can seat two people, and at the beginning of the course you have the opportunity to select a bench seat blank from ‘The Guild’s’ collection of beautiful salvaged timbers.

You will be directed to the MindBody booking page.

This project offers a great insight into some aspects of Windsor Chair Making and to a great extent chair making in general. For example, all the joinery associated with this project is directly related to all the joinery beneath the seat of a Windsor Chair.

For this project, we will be covering several topics. For example, turning your legs and stretchers on the lathe, you will be shown how to hand plane your bench seat, and if necessary, how to install a butterfly to help with the structural integrity of your bench seat. You will also be taught how to drill your mortices for the legs into your seat and the stretchers into your legs.

Time permitting, you will be taught how to apply Rustin’s Danish oil and wax to your Natural Edged Bench, ideally with 2 – 3 coats of oil, followed by a coat of wax.

This Natural Edged Bench is a wonderful functional item that you will cherish and use for many years to come! We look forward to seeing you at this ‘Natural Edged Bench – Beginner’s Course!
